SABIC EXPANDS LEXAN™ SHEET PRODUCT LINE TO DELIVER ENHANCED RAILWAY INTERIOR DESIGNS WITH FIRE SAFETYSABIC expands LEXAN™ Sheet product line to deliver enhanced railway interior designs with fire safety.

Railway coach manufacturers now have a new material that can help inspire a fresh approach to design and coach aesthetics while taking into consideration key safety regulations, thanks to a new polycarbonate sheet solution from SABIC. New LEXAN™ DH65011 sheet is being introduced here today at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. This latest innovation further expands SABIC’s offerings, currently one of the broadest global portfolios of regulatory-compliant thermoplastics in the rail industry. LEXAN DH65011 sheet is a thermoformable opaque, solid, low-gloss polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) material that is compliant with the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) fire safety standard for passenger rail car interior walls, ceilings and seat frames, NFPA 130. This new high-performance material solution is well-positioned to help railway interior designers and manufacturers create attractive components via the nearly unlimited decorative customization options that new LEXAN DH65011 sheet provides. Overall fuel efficiency and total cost of ownership of mass transit systems have the potential to be improved, as this lightweight material can help manufacturers to reduce the weight of railway interiors. “As trends continue for global population growth and urbanization, the demand for modern mass transit systems continues to rise. Railway coach manufacturers are facing challenges not only to comply with new regulations, but also to deliver passenger safety, comfort and a pleasant carriage environment in a cost-effective way,” said Lori Louthan, director of Mass Transportation for SABIC. “By offering our customers the innovative solutions they need, our new LEXAN sheet product provides a great alternative to address these challenges. This is an example of the specialized expertise that SABIC brings to its rail customers to help them meet industry requirements and achieve their design objectives and business goals.” New Sheet Material Enhances Design Freedom, Aesthetic and Sustainability Options SABIC’s new LEXAN DH65011 sheet offers customers a non-chlorinated and non-brominated material that can help support their sustainability efforts and is available in custom colors and patterns. Compared to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), thermosets, and sheet molding composite (SMC), the new LEXAN sheet material is significantly lighter in weight and can lead to decreases in system costs by enabling the consolidation of parts, streamlined production and the avoidance of secondary operations such as painting, coating, machining and polishing. The LEXAN DH65011 sheet is also resistant to the repeated use of various anti-graffiti cleaning agents used today. The new product is a cost efficient choice to replace phenolic fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) materials used in many interior train applications including interior wall panels, window frames, ceilings and other large interior parts. LEXAN DH65011 sheet has excellent mechanical properties, combining high impact strength with very high stiffness, while offering a low gloss surface finish after thermoforming. Its decorative capabilities can help avoid the cost and help reduce the potential environmental hazards of secondary painting, and enables aesthetic choices to help customers in their quest to create a differentiated passenger experience.
